The concept of vizualization is referenced quite a bit in the practice books. Sometimes in the form of "engraving" or "window" etc. The basic idea is to visualize the movement and fire the respective neural pathways, without actually moving.
Wikipedia has a quick intro under Ideokinesis.
Relevant quotes:
- research have shown that visualizing a clear goal of an action readily coordinates the neuromuscular details of the movement (the muscular recruitment, sequencing, and timing and force requirements).
- mentally practicing a motor image utilizes the same brain regions as actual physical execution
