2016 Lets start the carving season Pub

Lads and lasses, as we prepare to start the ski season in the Northern Hemisphere, let's put some things in order:

  • news about our website: enhancements etc
  • establishing goals etc
  • getting in shape
  • checking the equipment

A part of the benefits of a full membership on www.effectiveskiing.com is the assistance throughout the season and now we have a structured mechanism for that.

Some changes to the website

A lot of the topics have been revised. Some are still in draft state, though hopefully not for long. Lots of photos and videos have been added and we can't wait for snow, to create some more! In total we have 107 photos and 143 videos from all over the internet, right now.

A lot of ski drills have been added (48) and more are on the way... although that sounds like too many... we should maybe refocus on a more useful subset.

The new feedback module allows you to keep in touch with us. You can use it as a journal and to send/receive messages and request/receive feedback from coaches and keep track of your progress and history, across seasons and resorts and coaches. Read details for The feedback module++.

Those with paid memberships can make full use of this module throughout the season and will receive some messages soon, to start preparing for the season... if it will be squeaking here and there, it's because it's brand new - please let us know of any weirdness you observe.

Establishing goals

Well, "getting better" is not going to cut it. Of course that's why you joined us, but you'll need to get more specific than that and we'll help you do that.

Setting realistic goals depends on several things, including:

  • time on snow
  • current skill
  • level of fitness, injuries, age perhaps etc
  • dedication, really - will you work all day or just one hour and "just ski" the rest ;)

Upgrading your skiing, to be more effective and working your way through our progressions will be the primary long term goal. It works well, as we have checklists at the end of each level, but even that should be complemented by a more precise list of personal goals.

To help you set realistic personal goals, we'll start a dialog via the feedback and work on those through the season, one on one.

It will help a lot to have some basis for that, so you should start by uploading some video and/or photos of your skiing, so we can assess the current level and help you figure out what next: click on "Keep up", then "Coaching" and then send a MA request with the link to the video / photos.

Getting in shape

You need to get in shape! Well, me too, of course... working on that. With the ski season (almost) upon us, it is imperative that we do something to get in shape... remember: the more performance you're looking at, the more in shape you have to be.

Here are some ideas:

Equipment

Going through a simple checklist can go a long way towards making sure this is a smooth season:

  • are the boots ok? Worn, old, loose buckles? Do they still fit?
  • did you ever get them aligned? If not, that could be the priority for this season.
  • are the skis ok? Do you have a carving ski? Is it tuned and ready to go?
    • if not, there's still time to check a ski swap close to you
  • check the DINs! They may have been winded down for storage... or just gotten old.
  • poles, gloves, helmets and whatever else: check them now.

Members will get an equipment questionnaire soon, so we know what's what.

Here's some more reading, if you're looking at the equipment:

cheers, Razie
