CSCF technical free ski evaluation Pub

The values

The evaluation of each skill is in the IACR system:

  • Initiation - the skier understands what needs to be done
  • Acquisition - the skier can execute sometimes
  • Consolidation - the skier can execute often, in diverse conditions
  • Refinement - the skier owns the skill

The Elements

Athletic stance

Forward, ankle flexion, shin pressure, movement (vertical and over terrain), platform and balance.

  • Head/Eyes: Looking forward scanning terrain
  • Chest Shoulders: Open working with core
  • Hips: Slightly flexed and ready to move to adjust COM as terrain varies?
  • Knees: Can the skier move up and down in the middle of the ski?
  • Ankles and knees work together?
  • Ankles: Do the boots work? Can they flex?

Ankle flexion

Stay in middle of ski in all situations. Creates shin pressure. Ankles and knees working together to keep COM over BOS while moving over terrain.

Parallel skis

Ski tips and bindings parallel and upper/lower separation.

Outside ski

Weight the outside ski, platform, angulation and separation, force and turning.

Edging and angle

Start rolling the skis on edge with the lowest joint: ankles, knees, hip.

Pole plant

Consistent pole plant: timing, rythm, coordination, balance. Quiet upper body, hands in front, look ahead.

COM BOS

COM moves with the skis throughout the turn

Coiling

How well the skier is counteracting the turning forces throughout the turn. This gives the appearance of the upper body being stable, in the rotational plane.

See Counteraction and Coiling.
